A-League Finals Overview
The A-League finals is a little different to the AFL & NRL finals structure.
The A-League run the Major Semi Final (this year played between Melbourne Victory and Sydney FC) over the 1st and 2nd leg of the finals (a game is played at each home ground). Note, the Major Semi Final is different to the Minor Semi Final played between Wellington Phoenix and Newcastle jets during the second leg.
The winner of the Major Semi final (the team that goes into the Preliminary Final) is the team that has the best aggregate score over the two games.
The above can be confirmed via the official rules of the 2009/2010 A-league.
Footytips.com.au and the Major Semi-final
Footytips.com.au take the result at the end of the 90 minutes of the game. This is done because it is possible that the 2nd leg of the Major Semi-Final can go into extra time, to determine the overall winner of both legs. A team can win the match, but then extra time can be played because the aggregate result of the two matches are the same. In this scenario, footytips.com.au does not take into consideration the extra time played to determine the aggregate winner of both matches into the result of the 2nd leg.
Confusing? Yes, we agree.
For the record, we publish this policy on our website as shown below:
What happened in 2010?
In the first leg of the Major Semi finals, Victory played Sydney FC and and won 2-1. In the second leg of the Major Semi Final, the result at the end of the 90 minutes was Sydney FC 2 goals, Melbourne Victory 1 goal.
Hence, the aggregate score of both matches was 3 - 3. Sydney FC won the game in the 2nd leg of the finals (which footytips.com.au recognises as the winner), but extra time was played so to determine the aggregate winner.
Victory scored a goal in the 113th minute to progress into the preliminary final. You might hear the game reported as a 2 - 2 draw, but this is not technically correct (the 2 - 2 score is technically the result of the 2nd leg of the Major Semi Finals AND the extra time played to determine the aggregate winner of the 1st and 2nd leg).
We would love to hear from you about this if you have any comments or disagree with the way we deal with it.
